Substitutes, stimulators, simulators, simulacra

While many animals use tools, the sophistication of human tools and the extent of their use by humans appears to be well beyond any other earthly life form, past and present. However, the use of tools to satisfy certain base human passions seems to cause considerable concern for at least some.

Human use of tools as a substitute for expressing both sexual and violent desires are often met with fairly negative reactions.

Are stimulators, simulators and simulacra used to satisfy human passions for sex and violence acceptable? Does the use of substitutes provoke and dangerously overstimulate these desires? Or do they placate and sublimate these human desires?

DEBATE: Anyone want 3-5 minutes to present a case that stimulators, simulators, simulacra help sublimate unhealthy human desires? And anyone for the opposing position that they provoke unhealthy human desires?

QUESTIONS & READINGS

Are sex stimulators (pornography, sex toys, etc.) helpful or harmful?

Are sex-bots (simulacra) helpful or harmful?

Are violence simulators (videogames, punching bags, sports) helpful or harmful?

Might development of victim-bots be helpful or harmful?

Is the human desire for sex without love acceptable? What about violence without aggression (hatred)?

If it is preferred that human desires be expressed directly, what then of Germaine Greer's scathing summation that "The man regards [the woman] as a receptacle into which he has emptied his sperm, a kind of human spitoon, and turns from her in disgust" (The Female Eunuch, 1970).

Under what conditions ought human desires be sublimated (expressed via substitutes) or even simply suppressed?

Two songs exploring the idea of substitutes:
Tracks of my tears, Smokey Robinson (lyrics)
Substitute, The Who (inspired by the line in 'Tracks of my tears': "Although she may be cute, she's just a substitute")
